Getting started with Ledger Live
The first time you use the Ledger Live application, it will help you set up your Ledger device and configure the app. Ledger Live stores your accounts and settings on your computer or phone. You will have to set up your accounts again on any additional computer or phone.
Before you begin
- Get your Ledger device.
- Download and install Ledger Live.

- Start the Ledger Live application.
- On the welcome screen, click on Get started.
- Choose your device, then click Select.
- Choose how to set up your device:
- First time using your device? Choose Set up a new device to generate new private keys and to create new accounts.
- If your device is already fully set up with a recovery phrase, choose Connect your device and then proceed to Step 3. Security checklist.
Please note: The Ledger Nano X can only connect to the Ledger Live desktop app via USB.
- Have an existing recovery phrase and want to restore it on a new Nano device? Scroll down and select Restore your recovery phrase on a new device to regain access to your existing accounts using your 24-word recovery phrase, also known as a mnemonic seed.
- If you're already a Ledger Recover subscriber and wish to restore your device, select Restore using Ledger Recover.
- First time using your device? Choose Set up a new device to generate new private keys and to create new accounts.
First, you'll choose a 4 to 8-digit PIN code that unlocks your device. Then you'll save or restore your 24-word recovery phrase. Your recovery phrase backs up the private keys that manage your crypto assets. It can be used to restore access to your crypto assets in case you lose access to your device.
- Set up your device by following the steps provided in Ledger Live:
- To set up as a new device, check the dedicated article for Ledger Nano S, Ledger Nano S Plus, or Ledger Nano X.
- To restore your device from a recovery phrase, check the dedicated article.
- Once your Ledger hardware wallet is ready, click on Continue in Ledger Live.
Complete the security checklist to verify that you benefit from the optimal level of security.
- Click on Check my Nano, to verify that your device is a genuine Ledger device. Only a genuine Ledger device can provide the cryptographic proof required to connect with Ledger’s secure server.
This process might take a few moments. - Allow Ledger Live to access your Ledger device by pressing both buttons on your Ledger device simultaneously.
- Click on Continue once you see: All Good! Your Ledger device is genuine and ready to use with Ledger Live.
- Ledger Recover is an optional, ID-based key recovery service that provides a backup for your Secret Recovery Phrase.
To enroll, choose Start your free trial.
Already a subscriber? Select Sign in.
To skip the subscription, click the "X" to close out the window, and proceed with Ledger Live setup.

Choose an optional password that unlocks the application to enhance your privacy. You should set a password if others have access to your computer.
Explore our guide for assistance in setting up a password within Ledger Live.
Make sure to remember your password. Losing it requires resetting Ledger Live and re-adding your accounts. This does not affect your crypto assets.
Besides mandatory technical data, you can choose which anonymous data to share with Ledger to help improve the quality of our products and services. By opting in, Ledger will automatically collect this data. You can decide to opt-out at any time in the application settings.
- Click on Settings.
- While in the General tab, scroll down to Bug Reports and Analytics.
- Toggle which optional data to share:
- Analytics: Enable analytics of usage data to help Ledger improve the user experience.
- Bug reports: Send automatic bug reports when the application crashes to help improve its stability.
To set up another device, restart the Device setup process from the Help tab in the settings.

Ledger Nano X
- Open the Ledger Live app on your phone.
- Tap on Get started.
- Tap on Ledger Nano X.
- Choose your option:
- Import desktop accounts: If your device is already set up and your accounts are in Ledger Live desktop. Proceed to the Import desktop accounts block below.
- Initialize as new device: Go to Step 2. Set up your device.
- Restore from recovery phrase: Continue to Step 2. Set up your device.
- Connect your Nano if your device is already set up and ready to use.
Ledger Nano S Plus
- Open the Ledger Live app on your phone.
- Tap on Get started.
- Choose your device.
- If your device is already set up and your accounts are in Ledger Live desktop: proceed to the Import desktop accounts block below. Otherwise, use Ledger Live desktop to set up your device.
Ledger Sync Overview
Ledger Sync is a service within Ledger Live that keeps your hardware wallet accounts synchronized across both desktop and mobile sessions. It uses the Ledger Key Ring Protocol, designed to use a hardware wallet as the central point for end-to-end encryption for decentralized apps. - Choose your option:
- Set up as new device if this is your first time using a hardware wallet. Follow the instructions in Ledger Live mobile to choose your PIN code and write down your recovery phrase. Learn more
- Restore from recovery phrase if you already have a recovery phrase to restore. Learn more
- Once your device is ready, complete the security checklist in Ledger Live to verify that you benefit from the optimal level of security.
Important: Contact us if you've answered No to any question, or when in doubt.
- Tap Pair new Ledger Nano X in Ledger Live. Bluetooth must be enabled on your phone and Ledger Nano X (enabled by default, turning Bluetooth on/off requires a reboot).
On Android, Ledger Live requires location services to pair your device. Your location information is never stored by Ledger. - Choose your Ledger Nano X once it's detected in Ledger Live. A Bluetooth pairing request with a pairing code is shown on both devices.
- Verify that both codes are the same, then confirm the pairing on your smartphone.
- Press both buttons on your Ledger Nano X to confirm the pairing.
- Press both buttons to allow My Ledger to access your Ledger Nano X. The pairing is complete after the genuine check with Ledger's secure server.
- Tap Rename to customize your Ledger Nano X device name.
Choose an optional password that unlocks the application to enhance your privacy. Depending on your phone's functionality, you can enable biometrics to unlock the app without entering your password.
- Tap Set password or Skip if you do not want to set a password.
- Choose your password and tap Confirm.
- Enter your password once more.
- Tap the toggle to enable unlocking Ledger Live using your face or fingerprint.
- Tap Continue.
Make sure to remember your password. Losing it requires resetting Ledger Live and re-adding accounts. This does not affect your crypto assets.
Besides mandatory technical data, you can share anonymous data with Ledger to help improve its products. Ledger will automatically collect this data unless you decide to opt-out. This can be done at any time in Settings > General.
- Select which data to share:

- Bug reports: Send automatic bug reports when the application crashes to help improve its stability.
- Tap Continue to acknowledge having read and to accept Ledger's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
- Tap Open Ledger Live to access Portfolio.
