Install, uninstall and update apps

Use the 'My Ledger' section in the Ledger Live app to install or uninstall apps on your Ledger device.

How apps work

  • Your Ledger device securely stores your private keys giving access to your crypto assets.
  • You need to install apps on your Ledger device to manage different crypto assets. For example, you need to install the Bitcoin (BTC) app to create and manage Bitcoin accounts in Ledger Live with your Ledger device.
  • Ledger devices have limited storage and the sizes of apps vary. You can safely install and uninstall apps when needed. Your private keys stay safe on your device and are backed up on your Recovery sheet.

I can't install or uninstall an app on my Ledger device

First, ensure that your Ledger device has enough storage space to install the desired app. If the problem continues, try manually installing the app from the 'My Ledger' section in Ledger Live. Some apps, known as dependent apps, require the Ethereum (ETH) app to be installed first. This applies to all EVM-based apps like Polygon (MATIC), XDC, Arbitrum, Binance Smart Chain (BNB), and Optimism (OP Mainnet). In such cases, you may need to install the Ethereum (ETH) app first, followed by the dependent app.

When it comes to uninstalling, you should first manually remove the dependent app before uninstalling the Ethereum (ETH) app. For instance, you would manually uninstall the Polygon (MATIC) app and then proceed to uninstall the Ethereum (ETH) app.

Number of installable apps

The number of apps you can install depends on the apps and Ledger device you are using. My Ledger in Ledger Live shows the used storage per app and the storage remaining. Some apps are larger than others.

  App storage space

The storage space for apps is the total storage space of the device minus the firmware size. The firmware size can vary depending on the firmware version.
