Astar (ASTR)

This article describes how to create your first Astar (ASTR) account with your Ledger and the polkadot.js extension.
Check out the Astar website to learn more about the project.

 Unlike Astar EVM (ASTR) accounts which are supported in the Ledger Live app, regular Astar accounts cannot be added to Ledger Live and require connecting your Ledger device to a Ledger-compatible third-party wallet like polkadot.js

Before you start

Install the Astar app on your Ledger device

Tip for Ledger Nano S users

Ledger Nano S users should install the Astar XL version of the app:

  1. Open My Ledger in Ledger Live.
  2. Connect and unlock your Ledger device.
  3. If asked, allow My Ledger to access your device.
  4. Search for Astar in the app catalog.
  5. Click Install.

Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus and Nano X limitations

At the time of this release, the following operations are NOT SUPPORTED on Ledger devices:

  • EVM withdrawal: It is not possible to claim tokens from the Astar EVM side.
  • XCM transfers
  • Vesting

Connect to polkadot.js extension

  1. Install polkadot.js extension.
  2. Open extenstion.
  3. Create polkadot.js account by clicking on + button.
  4. Save your 12 mnemonic words.
  5. Name your account and set up the password.
  6.  Open the extension and select Attach Ledger account as shown below:
  7.  Make sure your Ledger device is connected to your PC and Astar app is open.
  8.  Select Astar Network and name your Astar account.
  9.  Click Import Account.

You successfully connected to Ledger Astar account.

Configure the Ledger device connection method

  1. Go to the Astar settings page.
  2. Ensure Attach Ledger via WebHID is the preferred connection method listed under account options > manage hardware connections, as shown in the image below:

Visit the Astar Portal

  1. Open a browser and visit the Astar Portal.
  2. Connect the Polkadot.js extension to the Portal.
  3. Allow access.
  4. Select the Ledger account that was imported during the last step. It can now be used to participate in dApp staking.
