Scam NFTs on EVM Networks

Last updated: 02/07/2025

This article explains how to identify scam NFTs on EVM networks and offers guidance on protecting yourself from them.

Overview of Scam NFTs on EVM Networks

Scammers are increasingly sending unsolicited scam NFTs on networks like Ethereum, Polygon, and Arbitrum. These scam NFTs aim to lure you into interacting with malicious contracts, visiting fake Ledger Live apps, and entering your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP).

Common characteristics of these scams include:

  • Sending NFTs with enticing names like "Exclusive Offer" or "Claim Your Reward."
  • Embedding links or prompts within the NFT metadata that lead to external websites.
  • Offering NFT vouchers that promise "free money" to attract you to third-party sites.

How Do I Know If I’ve Received a Scam NFT?

You might have received a scam NFT if:

  • Unfamiliar NFTs appear in your wallet without any action on your part.
  • Your transaction history in Ledger Live shows activities you didn't initiate.
  • You notice messages or notifications prompting unexpected actions related to new NFTs or airdrops.
  • There are urgencies like immediate action required for prizes or limited-time offers associated with assets in your wallet.

How to Protect Yourself Against These Scams

Because blockchain addresses are publicly visible, it's impossible to completely stop these scams—they can target anyone. Even creating a new account won't protect you from being targeted. Protect yourself by taking the following steps:

  • Avoid interacting with unknown NFTs with linked QR Codes or external websites.
  • Never share your 24-word SRP. Keep it entirely offline, never take a picture of it on your phone. The only time your 24-word SRP should be entered is upon the setup of your device.
  • Download Ledger Live only from official sources and keep your Ledger Live app and device firmware updated.
